The new framework of 7 wastes in motor carrier operations was tested by studying operations at five different motor carrier operators in Sweden and Switzerland. The results from these studies validated the applicability of the new 7 waste framework for motor carrier operations and thereby confirmed the results of the interview study. Initial attempts to quantify the waste based on the observations were carried out in order to strengthen the validation, indicating both significant waste in operations and a high potential for reducing waste.

The analytical contribution of this work is a new framework of 7 wastes for motor carrier operations. The framework shows typical operational inefficiencies and is useful for describing and analyzing waste in motor carrier operations.

Combining cross-docking pick-by-line with traditional warehousing reduces the supply chain cost by 6.4 per cent. This is due to the reduction in the supplier picking activities and to the increase in its vehicle’s fill rate This configuration allows a reduction in the supplier cost while keeping the benefits to the retailer in terms of inventory and handling costs reduction
Finally, this paper provides recommendations for supply chain managers on the impact of the distribution strategies on the supply chain costs
